Chania was the capital of Crete until 1972 and is now the second largest town on Crete. The old town, with its beautiful port, consists of buildings from both the Venetian and Turkish periods. Walking through the narrow streets is like a trip through the history of Crete. Artefacts from all the various periods can be seen in the historical, archaeological and nautical museums of the town.
Around the crescent shaped harbour, you will find many excellent restaurants, bars and small shops. A walk along the jetty to the lighthouse will reward you with a view of the city with the Lefka Ori in the background. A well-known landmark in Chania is the cruciform covered market, with its fascinating array of provisions. The town is also famous for its leather goods, especially hand-made boots, and the streets behind the market are full of cobblers and leather shops.
The unique melting pot of history, which has formed this town, is part of its enduring charm.
