The Dikteon Cave lies above the village of Psychro at a height of 1023 m with a beautiful view over the Lassithi Plateau.
The cave is the most well-known on Crete. According to mythology Zeus, the father of the gods, was born here in order to protect him from his father, Kronos. As Kronos was afraid of losing his ruling power, he wanted to eat the newborn child. The mother, Rhea, fled into the cave after having first given Kronos a stone wrapped in linen to eat. Rhea entrusted Zeus to the Nymphs, who brought him to the Lassithi Plateau. There he was raised on the milk of the goat, Amaltheia, and wild honey.
The cave can be reached in about 20 minutes from the parking area. The descent into the cave and some spots are a bit slippery.
