The Kamares Cave is situated on the south slopes of the Ida Mountains. In the village of Kamares starts the path leading up to the cave.
Its steep ascent takes 3-4 hours to complete and a part of it is through wooded area with several springs and rewarding views to the Messara plain and the Libyan Sea.
The huge entrance of about 40 m wide and 20 m high can be seen from afar, even from the Minoan Palace of Phaestos.
A shepherd discovered the cave in 1890. Four years later Italian archaeologists began their research. Not far from the entrance they found in the earth a large collection of ceramic objects dating from between 1900 and 1700 BC.
The so-called Kamares jars were of the highest fine quality and decorated with colour. Remains of grain, seeds and field crops - sacrificial offerings - were still to be found in the jars. The finds can be seen in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.
