The village of Embrosneros is ca 10 km south of Vrisses and built on a hill called Kastro. The farmers of the village are sheep and goat breeders and they also cultivate olive and carob trees.
The Panagia church, built in 1888, is the main church of Embrosneros but the small Agios Antonis church, built in a rock at the entrance of the village, is one of the oldest.
A story is told to prove the former richness of Embrosneros: Usually stones, loam and water were used for building but instead of water, milk was used to build the fortress. The ruins, today's Pirgos Alidakis, remain from this epoch. The building is still being renovated and you may enter at your own risk.
The Sfakiotes destroyed the fortress in about 1800 and only one remaining building could be used. More than 50 years ago it became the police station of the village. There is a baker, a cheese factory and a school for the few children of the village. The inhabitants meet in the old cafenion in the village square.
