CHANIA
Georgioupolis is situated in a region with a lot of water and
old trees, and is built on the delta of the Almiros River. Three rivers run into
the sea at Georgioupolis and are all a bird and turtle paradise, which must be
preserved!
The road bridge crosses the largest river, the Almiros, whose
mouth creates a small harbour, the meeting point of the fishermen. Every morning
this is a lively place with people waiting for the fishing boats to come back
with their catch. A crowd gathers quickly as the fish is offered for sale
immediately, in the Cretan way.
More than 30 years ago, the village was still a lonely place and
the life of the village people was dominated by fishing and farming. There are now a lot of tourist facilities but the village has still kept its own character and charm.
Special features of the place are a traditional bakery at the
entrance of the village and the eucalyptus trees, especially the pretty
eucalyptus avenue on the old road to Vrisses.
For all those wanting not only to bathe, the village square is
the right place to be; it is where locals and tourists meet in the numerous
cafes, ouzeries, restaurants and tavernas. Many small souvenir shops beckon
the visitors as they take a stroll.
The long stretches of golden sandy beach in front of the
village, the environment of small mountain villages close by, the landscape full
of vineyards, olive and cypress groves and the proximity of the cities of Vrisses
and Vrisses, invite you to a daily excursion by car or on foot.
