The village of Kournas is built on a hill in the shape of a horseshoe ca. 7 km south of the village of Georgioupolis and the sea. The baker is well known for his paximadi, a double baked bread, hard and hearty, and Cretan home cooking is served in the traditional tavernas.
There are three historic churches in Kournas: - The small Agios Georgos church with frescoes from the 14th century. (Children's graves have been found in the church.) - The Agia Irini Church - The large new Panagia Church
During the Turkish occupation the village children had to be educated in hiding and there was a secret underground school.
On the road to the lake there is a cave with stalactites. The entrance is not easy to find and rather dangerous. You may enter at your own risk but you can only visit part of the cave. The exact size is not known. Many people believe that the cave and the lake are somehow connected.
