Sougia is a quiet little town on the south coast east of Paleochora and has a very wide pebble beach, stretching along the shore for about one kilometre. The beach east of the town is said to be the nicest.
In Sougia there are some mini markets, a kiosk, and several tavernas along the beach inviting you to sit there and relax.
Sougia's ancient name was Syia and it was the harbour of the ancient town of Elyros, located near the village of Rodovani, 10 km north of Sougia. In the church on the western edge of the village one can see a beautiful mosaic floor and outside, the remains of an early Byzantine basilica.
For the visitor who enjoys walking, nature and antiquities, a surprise awaits him west of Sougia: ancient Lissos. A path leading there begins west of the village at the small port of Sougia. In an idyllic verdant landscape the ruins of the ancient city are scattered around and the sole inhabitant is the custodian who guides you to the tiny Dorian temple of Asklepios, the ancient theatre and the vaulted tombs.
At Sougia ends the Irini Gorge, which starts in the village of Agia Irini
