West of Kissamos and north of the beautiful village of Kaliviani, stretches the impressive Gramvousa Peninsula. The peninsula is formed by steep rocks and is covered with bushes of thyme and oregano and wild flowers.
On the northwest side of the peninsula opposite the island of Gramvousa is the wonderful beach of Balos with fine, white sand stretching into the emerald-green sea.
Due to its strategic location, the Venetians fortified Gramvoussa and built a castle on top of the steep rocks.
From the village of Kaliviani a dirt road leads along the peninsula until just after the church of Agia Irini, from where a path leads down to Balos Beach.
