Maleme is a town stretching along the coast, ca. 16 km west of Chania, with hotels, apartments, some mini markets, tavernas and a beach.
Before World War II it was the site of the airport of Chania.
In May 1941 the German airborne invasion conquered the strategic important airport against furious resistance. The loss on both sides was enormous. The fierce fighting has gone down in history as the Battle of Crete.
From the main road a road turns to the left leading to the German cemetery and to the Minoan Tholos tomb.
