CHANIA
Almirida, a pretty little seaside village, has been described as
an area of great beauty. It has small sandy beaches with crystal clear waters
and lies 22 km east of Kalives and Cape Drapanon.
In the small cove there are cosy waterside tavernas, where one
can enjoy fresh fish and traditional Cretan cooking, small shops and minimarkets
invite you in to look around.
The rolling wooded countryside behind Almirida is some of the
most beautiful on Crete and a walker's paradise, especially in April and May
when the landscape is full of spring flowers.
Historically it is most interesting; the whole area used to be
the colony of an ancient civilisation. At the west entrance of the village
beside the road foundations, the well preserved geometric and floral decorated
mosaics of a 3-naved basilica dating from 5th/6th century BC, can still be seen.
Around Almirida are other beautiful and traditional villages
such Kalives, Plaka, Kambia, Kalives,
which together with Almirida combine to make a remarkable tourist resort.
