The village of Axos lies ca. 40 km south of Heraklion above a fertile valley and north of the Psiloritis, the highest peak in the Ida Mountains.
Axos was an important ancient city during the Dorian as well as the Byzantine period as the large number of Byzantine churches in the area show. The Agia Irini church in the centre of the village is the most important church of this epoch.
Above the village is the acropolis of the ancient city, where excavations have revealed a large temple platform
In the village itself one can find several traditional tavernas, supermarkets and cafenions.
