The name Episkopi means bishopric, and is common to many villages on Crete, which used to house bishop's offices in the past.
The village overlooks the north coast area of Apokoronas, where the village of Georgioupolis lies ca. 8 km away. Only 5 km from Episkopi is the village of Argyroupolis, the ancient Lappa, built between two rivers on top of the ruins of the Dorian settlement of Lappa.
