The well-known resort of Malia is ca. 35 km east of Heraklion in a fertile area rich in water and known for its crops of potatoes and bananas.
The town is divided into two by the main road. Above the road is the old centre with its narrow winding alleys and cosy taverns. From here a road leads directly up to the Lassithi Plateau.
From the main road a 2 km-long road leads down to the beach. This road is the hub of the nightlife as it is lined on both sides by taverns, bars and discos.
The beautiful beaches, which are some of the nicest on Crete, stretch from both sides of the town and are separated here and there by cliffs.
Towards the east of the town is a small fishing harbour.
Further to the east at the end of a bay with sand dunes lies the excavation site of the Minoan Palace of Malia.
