Megala Horafia stands above the Souda Bay on the old road from Chania to Vrisses. Because of the strategic location the farmers built their houses high up on slopes surrounded by large plots of land for safety reasons. And so originated the widespread village Megala Horafia (large fields) where the narrow streets, which are typical in Cretan villages, are completely missing.
The crossroads is also the village square and here there are 3 cafenions/tavernas. From the square a path leads up to the ancient town of Aptera and the Turkish fort.
Following the old road one can take the turn to reach Malaxa or Vrisses via Stilos.
Shopping facilities are in 8 km distant Souda. The town of Chania is 15 km away. Beaches can be found at Kalives (7 km) or Almirida (10 km).
