CHANIA
The district of Apokoronas is halfway between
Chania and is crossed by the National Road. The peninsula of
Drapanos and the northern slopes of the White Mountains, along which the
villages of Melidoni, Fres, Tzitzifes, Vafes and Chania stretch out like a
string of pearls, make up the district. The landscape is full of olive groves and cypress trees and in spring is a sea of flowers.
The small, often ruined villages still have the remains of Venetian architecture. The villagers are trying very hard to revive old
traditions and to restore the houses. Fine examples can be found in Chania, the
main village of the district, and in the villages of Chania.
The peninsula of Drapanos is like a huge rock with cliff faces falling steeply into the sea.
On the north coast are the resorts of Chania and Plaka. On the east side are Kefalos, Paleloni and Drapanos. From the latter one can drive down to a wonderful, small bay "Ombrosgialos" (umber beach), with its
taverna. The village square of Likotinaria offers an
unforgettable view over the sea and the coast from Chania.
In Kalamitsi just outside of Exopolis the women of the village spend their time breeding silk worms and producing silk in traditional Cretan fashion.
