The almost circular Omalos Plateau lies ca. 40 km southeast of Chania at a height of 1,050 m and closed in by the high peaks of the White Mountains.
The plateau was once the stronghold of the Cretan resistance. Fertile alluvial earth once covered the area and allowed intensive crop growing. Today only a small part of the land is cultivated, now large numbers of sheep and goats graze here and on the mountain slopes.
The huge amounts of water, which flow especially in the spring thaw, turn the plateau into a huge lake. The Tsanis Cave can be found next to the road on the north edge of the plateau at the lowest point. It is a huge yawning cavern, reaching several km into the earth and which has still not been fully researched. Water probes have proven that water flows down from this cave almost to Chania.
The plateau is important for tourism, the way through the Chania starts at the southern edge. It is also starting point for many walking routes into the White Mountains, to the Gingilos or the Volakis peaks, to the Kallergi Hut and further on to the Melindaou or further still to the Pachnes, at 2453 m the highest peak in the region.
