The Cave of the Bear is a 10-minute walk from the Gouverneto Monastery.
Ruins surround the entrance to the cave and at the left side is the church of the Virgin. In the cave a stalagmite in the shape of a bear bowing over a cistern can be seen.
Tradition reflects that the bear was once alive and it used to drink the water of the cistern, without being seen by the local inhabitants or the monks. When they wanted to fetch water they wondered why the cistern was always empty. So they lay in wait and saw that the huge bear came and drank the water in the cistern. One of the monks prayed to the Virgin for help and as he ended his prayer the bear became petrified. The bear has stood by the cistern for many centuries ever since.
From the cave a path leads to the Monastery of Katholiko.
