Asteri, a small settlement ca. 13 km east of Rethymnon, is a good starting place to discover the countryside around Rethymnon.
For swimming, the beach of Stavromenos, lined with tavernas, is ca. 5 km away. During the incubation period of the Careta turtle, the places where eggs have been laid are marked in order to protect them.
The hinterland is criss-crossed with many hiking routes, leading from village to village, offering something special for walkers. Also nearby are some attractive gorges: Rethymnon.
Here is also the perfect starting point for excursions by car. In the neighbouring village of Pangalohori is the beautiful Rethymnon, well known for its pottery.
