The traditional village of Kokkino Horio lies in the eastern part of Apokoronas overlooking Souda Bay and the peninsula of Akrotiri, just 4 km from the village of Akrotiri with its beautiful swimming bay.
It is built in traditional architectural style with narrow roads, beautiful gates and tiled roofs. The small village square with several cafenions is an inviting place for a chat with the local people.
Just once, more than 30 years ago, the village and its inhabitants were snatched from everyday life. The narrow lanes, the old houses and the village square became the scenes for parts of the most well known Cretan film, “Zorba the Greek”, based on the book of Nikos Kazantzakis, the famous Cretan writer.
Above Kokkino Horio one can see the strange shaped hill Drapanokefalo. At Cape Drapano is the impressive "Elephant Cave" with an area of 60 m x 60 m full of stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and colours. The cave is only reachable from the sea.
Outside the village is the factory where blown glass products are made from old glass and which is the only recycling plant for glass in Greece.
