The village of Imbros lies at an altitude of 780 m half way between the village of Vrisses in the north and Chora Sfakion at the south coast.
The inhabitants are mostly stockbreeders and farmers and they cultivate walnut trees and grapes, which produce excellent wine and raki. Also a fine honey is produced here.
It is a place of great historical value and birthplace of great Cretan revolutionaries. The village was destroyed in all the revolutions on Crete in 1770, 1821, 1824 and 1827.
Just outside the village is the entrance to the Imbros Gorge.
There are several taverns in the village where one can taste the traditional Sfakian cooking.
During the day many buses pass through the village bringing tourists to the Imbros gorge and picking up the walkers from the Samaria gorge at Chora Sfakion.
