Avdou lies on the northwest flanks of the Dikti Mountains, ca. 30 km from Heraklion. The village is on the way between Heraklion and the Lassithi Plateau, but away from the main road.
The village has kept its typical character: the narrow alleys, the village square with its cafenion, taverna and supermarket.
Nearby are the villages of Potamies and Gonies, where there are more supermarkets and tavernas.
The countryside surrounding Avdou is full of lush vegetation and fruit and vegetable gardens, and is very suitable for hiking tours. In the village and the surrounding area there are 6 Byzantine churches where in a few, there are some beautiful wall paintings still to be seen.
There are also some caves to be discovered.
This is not only a good place for hikers, the conditions here are also ideal for paragliding, riding and mountain biking.
