Malaxa lies 17 km east of Chania high up on a beautiful spot above the Souda Bay with views across to the Chania and the plain around Chania and to the Rodopou Peninsula.
Because of its elevated position Malaxa was the scene of many battles during the Turkish occupation. Outside of the village are ruins of Venetian and Byzantine churches.
In the village there is a taverna and a cafenion, which also serves as a mini market.
At the village of Katohori, ca. 7 km south of Malaxa and near to a taverna, is the entrance to the Chania, which leads down to the village of Stilos.
From Katohori a fairly good road leads to Chania, where Eleftherios Venizelos, one of the leading statesmen of Greece, had his headquarters.
