On the south coast of Crete, on a magnificent white sandy beach, stands one of the most beautiful Venetian fortresses, Frangokastello, built in 1340.
A strange phenomenon is said to take place. Each year on a morning in May, just before sunrise, a shadowy procession of armed black figures appears from the ruins and marches along the castle walls for about 10 minutes. The locals believe that these ghosts, who return each year, are the unredeemed souls of the dead who fell in 1828 during the battle between 700 Cretans and 8,000 Turks.
Frangokastello now is a small but developing community, with nice beaches lined by sand dunes and increasing tourist facilities. It is an ideal base to explore the southwest coast of Crete or the impressive White Mountains. In Frangokastello there are also some mini markets and tavernas.
The European hiking path, the Imbros Gorge and crosses the Kalikratis Gorge.
