The traditional village of Asites, located in the foothills of the eastern side of the Ida Mountains, lies ca. 25 km from Heraklion and is divided into pano (upper) and Kato (lower) Asites.
Near Ano Asites is the Byzantine chapel of Agios Antonios, built into a rockface above a gorge in a place of exceptional beauty surrounded by springs.
To the south of the village is the gorge of Haralambos and the river Michalopotamos where the "nychteridospilios" (bat-cave) can be found, a cave 100 m deep with water and full of bats.
The European Hiking Path, the E4, crosses Asites and leads to the shelter Prinos (1100m), located by a holy forest.
Outside Kato Asites is the monastery of Gorgolaini, which is also certainly worth a visit.
