Anopolis lies in a widespread valley and is a very old settlement as has been proven by finds of traces of remains of the ancient Greek era.
There are remains of Cyclopean walls near the Agia Ekaterina Church. It flourished mainly in the Roman and the Byzantine periods and its port was Phoenix, the present Loutro.
Anopolis was a centre of the resistance fighters against the Venetians and was destroyed in 1365, thereafter people moved to other villages in the area. At the beginning of the Turkish rule it was re-inhabited and became again a centre of resistance against the Turkish occupation.
Anopolis is the birthplace of Ioannis Vlachos, well known under the name of Daskalogiannis (teacher Ioannis), leader of the revolution of 1770 against the Turks and whose vision was the freedom of Crete. The revolution of 1770 was drowned in blood and Daskalogiannis himself found a terrible end. At the end of the village at the village square is his memorial.
Anopolis is starting point for several walking tours, e.g. through the Aradhena Gorge down to the sea, the ascent of Mount Pachnes, the highest peak of the Lefka Ori or via Aradhena and Agios Ioannis to Agia Roumeli.
