The former small fishing village Agia Pelagia lies ca. 20 km west of Heraklion and, in the last few years, has developed into a tourist resort.
It is surrounded by hills and mountains and stands at a wide picturesque bay with sand and pebble beaches, where numerous types of water sports are offered.
The tavernas stand one next to the other at the bay and in the often narrow streets behind the bay there are many souvenir shops and minimarkets.
The village took its name from the small church of Agia Pelagia, which stands on the west of the bay and which was once a dependency of the monastery of Savvathiana
The first archaeological finds prove the constant existence of the settlement since middle Minoan times.
