The peninsula of Akrotiri is east of the town of Chania and protects Souda Bay.
It offers an arid landscape but has some beautiful beaches at Kalathas, Tersanas and Chania, where also the tourist areas are concentrated. The nice sandy beach at Stavros is well known from the dance scenes in the film "Alexis Zorbas". In the most northern part, a steep cliff shelters the peninsula.
In the southern part lies Marathi at a beautiful bay, with the ruins of the ancient Minoa nearby.
At the beginning of the peninsula on the hill Profitis Ilias is the tomb of Elefterios Venizelas, one of the most important politicians of Greek history. From this tomb one has a beautiful view over the town of Chania and can enjoy a magical sunset.
In former years the peninsula was an ideal refuge for monks, then here in this solitary area stand several old monasteries within a radius of just a few kilometres: The most impressive and well preserved monastery of Chania and the ruins of the monastery of Chania, which can be reached after half an hour on foot.
The airport of Chania is at the northeastern part of the peninsula.
