On the north slopes of the Ida Mountains, ca. 55 km from Rethymnon and ca. 45 km from Heraklion, lies the village of Anogia, stretching over three levels.
The inhabitants of the village have their own customs and way of life, their own art. The roots of the speech used by the inhabitants can be found in the ancient Greek language.
Anogia took part in all struggles for liberation; during the Turkish occupation it was always in revolt, and in World War II it was a major centre of resistance.
The men of the village are concerned solely with stock farming, which includes milk and cheese production, the women with Cretan weaving.
From Anogia a road leads up to the Ida Mountains, and it is also a good starting point for longer tours in the Ida Mountains.
