The ruins of the Minoan town of Gournia lie on a hill 19 km south of Agios Nikolaos.
The ancient name of the site remains unknown, while the modern name is derived from the numerous cisterns (gournes) discovered here.
Although the town flourished during the late Minoan Period, other finds date from earlier periods. From the various finds it seems the inhabitants lived a simple life; a life of farming, fishing and handicrafts - totally different from that in the Minoan palaces.
The town is criss-crossed by stone paved roads and the visitor can walk through and see the rooms of the houses and remains of stairs, which must have led to an upper floor.
