Outside the village of Monastery of Odigitira a path leads down to the Ayiofarango Gorge, which ends at a beautiful beach at the Libyan Sea.
There are caves everywhere in which hermits used to live from the Byzantine period until the end of the 19th century, each in his own cave.
Shortly before arriving at the exit of the gorge one comes to a domed church dating from the 14th century and dedicated to Agios Antonios. The sanctuary of the church is part of a small cave.
A little further on the left side, there is a large cave named Goumenospilias (Abbot's cave). The entrance is low and the cave is lit by a hole in the roof.
It is said that there was hardly any contact between the hermits but once or twice a year they gathered in the cave. Only then was it possible to determine if some had died since the last meeting.
