A narrow road leads 4 km from the Agia Triada Monastery to the to the Gouverneto Monastery.
The Gouverneto Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in the area. It is said that the monastery dates from the 12th century but an inscription above the entrance, with the words from the Gospel of Matthew: "Narrow the door and hard the way that lead to life" carries the Greek date AΦAZ = 1537. It is dedicated to the Entry of Mary (Our Lady of the Angels) into the Temple, but is generally known as the monastery of Saint John the Hermit, its patron saint.
The fortress-like enclosure of the monastery has four, square towers at the corners, which played an important defensive role.
Once many monks lived here and the monastery had large revenue and vast estates. The Turkish conquest interrupted this prosperity. The beautiful cruciform church, which was under construction at the time, was never completed.
During the fight for independence in 1821 the monks were killed and the monastery plundered.
From the monastery a footpath leads to the Cave of the Bear and further down into a gorge to the ruins of the Cave of the Bear.
