The Monastery of Gonia was built in 1618 and lies at the beginning of the Rodopou Peninsula near the village of Kolimbari in a picturesque area.
It is built in the form of a fortress, as is common with other monasteries in the district of Chania, and was a meeting place of the ascetics and hermits of the region.
The monastery was also a well-known centre of resistance. The revolution of 1821 was a determining factor in the future of the monastery. It was ravaged by the Turks but the monks, hoverer, had taken precautions by sending 40 valuable icons and sacred vessels from the monastery to other Greek regions. The icons were returned after the end of the revolution.
Opposite the main entrance is the old fountain of the monastery with a beautiful inscription.
The museum of the monastery is rich in icons and manuscripts.
But there are also other valuables in the museum, for example two old codices of the monastery, full of data concerning its history.
