The Tsikhliana Gorge leading from Sirikari to Polyrhinia is wide and pleasant with magnificent rockfaces and is filled with sage in spring, oleander in summer and cyclamen in autumn.
A comfortable walk through the gorge follows the steep beginning.
At the end of the gorge there is an area full of olive groves from where a path leads up to the village of Polyrhinia. The path to the ancient city of Polyrhinia starts from the village square. A rest at the village square is recommended, as there is a 150 m difference in altitude and ca. 1 ½ hrs walk to the ancient city.
This walk combined with a visit to the ancient city is one of the most worthwhile excursions in western Crete.
