LASSITHI
The picturesque town of Agios Nikolaos with its lively harbour
is a pleasant place to go shopping, shady tree-lined avenues are filled with
shops.
The outer harbour is delightful and typically Mediterranean. The
quayside is lined with cafes and tavernas, fishing boats and caiques ready to
set sail.
The inner harbour is breathtaking - a deep, round chasm, with
houses perched atop the cliff and small craft moored in the mirror-like Lake
Voulismeni, which, tradition has it, is bottomless.
For those interested in excavations, there is no shortage of
sites to visit in the hills behind the Gulf of Mirabello.
Agios Nikolaos has a Byzantine church as well as an excellent
Archaeological Museum, housing Minoan finds from all over Crete.
South of Agios Nikolaos the sandy beaches of Almiros, Amoudara
and Istron are set into the craggy coastline.
